Today was an exciting afternoon at Burnaby South & BCSD. Student Government put on their annual Rebelfest for the students and community to enjoy. As the school day ended the students streamed from their classes and made their way to the cafeteria and courtyards to take part in a variety of activities. Everything from the concession stands to the talent show, the jousting competition and velcro wall the students were full of enthusiasm. There was also the slapshot competition, bouncy castle and of course the dunk tank – lets just say I was fully “immersed” in the culture of this student run event. Look for a more detailed description of the day and some photos soon.

Exciting times ahead May 8, 2010

Its hard to believe that we are into May!  Over the past few weeks we have completed our course request process for next year, our spring sports teams are heading into the play-offs, spring concerts and recitals are near and our Valedictorian has just been elected (congratulations Nolan Shelley).  All of these events signal that the end of the school year is near.

When I think of other areas in our lives, it often seems that the end signifies a slowing down, in some cases a grinding to a halt.  In a school this could not be further from the truth.  Rather than easing to an end, spring brings a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm into the building.  The Grads are caught in a mixture of excitement and anxiety as their days in high school are limited – some are happy and others wonder what the next few months and years will bring.  The Grade 11’s anticipate the opportunity to finally be the senior class of the school.  The Grade 10’s share the excitement of being seniors while realizing that course selection and exams are starting to count towards the decisions that will impact their lives in future.  The grade 9’s look ahead to the fact that they are approaching the halfway point in what can seem like a long 5 year journey and the 8’s are happy to no longer be the youngest in the school.

Let’s not forget the staff.  After investing months of energy and emotion into the students to prepare them for exams, the next year’s curriculum and a future outside of the school walls, the staff are all ready for a well deserved rest too.

All of these events create a curious mix of energy and excitement as the school races towards the end of June when final reports are issued and the doors swing closed on another year.  These next two months bring with it deadlines, celebrations, stress and excitement that can best be equated to a roller coaster that races through the dips and turns right until the point that the cars hurry toward the station.

With all of the events that happen over May and June in a high school I know I will try to take moments to enjoy those dips and turns, I hope you can find time through the joys and anxieties to do the same.  For all that our community will go through, are creating memories that last a lifetime.  Seeing as we are not slowing to this conclusion I hope those memories will be clear rather than blurred images from the hectic pace we are already moving.
