Homecoming October 27, 2011

There have been many questions about the impact of the Teachers’s strike.  Many parents have been been concerned about their child’s progress and are somewhat relieved to hear through the media that reports will be issued from the schools.  What those reports look like and the extent of the  information included, is yet to be determined.

For the students, while some are concerned about receiving their marks, largely their concerns have been over the impact on student activities.  One of the most consistent questions that has been presented to the Administration is whether the annual Homecoming Formal will still happen.

We know how important this event is to our students, some have waited 3 long years looking forward to this Rebel tradition.   We are also aware that many of our students have already picked out dresses and suits in preparation for this wonderful evening.

We are happy to report that Homecoming 2011 will be available to our grade 11 and 12 students again.  With the uncertainty created by Phase One of the teachers’ job action, a group of dedicated student leaders have taken on the planning of this event.  These students are collaborating to make this event a memorable experience for their peers.

This year’s event will take place on November 23, 2011 at the Metrotwon Hilton at the same cost as which students have paid previously.  Please stay tuned as more information becomes available.

Tonight the Rebels’ Athletics community celebrated another season of success.  Athletic Director Dane Clarke and the Sports Leadership class hosted the seasonal awards banquet that celebrates both individual and team accomplishments.

Each Fall, Winter and Spring the athletes descend upon the Rebel cafe for jokes, games, awards and a great meal as they unwind from a tough season of competition.  There was a great deal to celebrate this year as 7 out of 10 teams won the District Championships!

Mr. Einhorn and his wrestlers won both the girls and boys District Championships as well as the Fraser Valley Banner.    The team heads off to the Provincial Championships in Abbotsford beginning Wednesday.

Mr Smith and the grade 8 boys basketball team won the Bantam Boys District Championships before being edged out in the Lower Mainland finals.  These boys head to the Provincial Tournament in Pitt Meadows later this week.

The Junior Boy’s basketball team coached by Mr Price won the District and Lower Mainland Championships.  They leave for Victoria to compete in the Provincial Tournament beginning Wednesday.

The Senior Boys Basketball team is also still alive.  Avenging a regular season loss the boys beat rival Byrne Creek in the District Final to win the Championship.  The boys continue to compete in the Lower Mainland tournament when they face the Bulldogs again Wednesday night at Kits High.

Both the Juvenile boys basketball team coached by Karl Brysch and the Bantam Girls basketball team coached by student Sean Liu also won their respective District Championships before being eliminated in the Lower Mainland Championships.  The Juvenile boys however received a late invitation and they are now set to compete in the Provincial Tournament next week!

The evening was a great success as the students and coaches enjoyed a break from the preparations for various competitions.  Many thanks also go to Mr Pottinger and his catering classes for their hard work in keeping these hungry teams well fed!
